Coombe Girlsā€™ School and Sixth Form in New Malden is seeking an experienced Latin teacher to deliver a small weekly Latin class for students. This is a flexible, casual opportunity, well suited to a retired teacher or experienced practitioner looking for limited regular hours.

The current session runs after school on Tuesdays, though this may be negotiable for the right candidate.

Role overview

You will be responsible for delivering engaging and structured Latin teaching to a small GCSE group of students, supporting them through their second year of study towards completion in Summer 2027. Lessons will take place once a week from 3ā€“5pm.

The study of Latin provides students with the opportunity to develop a strong understanding of key linguistic concepts. This supports their progress in Latin while also providing a foundation for the study of other languages. A key aim of the course is to develop studentsā€™ precision and accuracy, enabling them to approach the language with confidence, comprehension and enjoyment.

Latin is taught in Years 7 and 8 to selected pupils based on CAT scores. In Years 9 and 10, it becomes an after-school GCSE option, with students working towards completion by the end of Year 10. The current cohort is a mixed Year 9 and 10 group (moving into Year 10 and 11 next academic year).

The course is structured around four key areas: vocabulary, grammar, reading and Roman civilisation. Alongside language acquisition, it also supports wider learning, including development of English vocabulary through Latin root words, reinforcement of modern language grammar understanding, and enrichment of historical knowledge through the study of ancient civilisation.

About you

  • Qualified teacher with experience teaching Latin (GCSE and/or A Level)
  • Strong subject knowledge and ability to engage and motivate students
  • Confident planning and delivering effective, focused lessons
  • Reliable and able to work independently

Working pattern & pay

  • 2 hours per week, term time only
  • Ā£38 to Ā£45 per hour (dependent on experience)
  • Casual contract
