Roman Society Council

The Roman Society is looking for new members to join our Council from June 2025.

The Roman Society (Society for the Promotion of Roman Studies) was founded in 1910 to promote the study of Roman history, archaeology, literature and art down to about A.D. 700.  The Society publishes the Journal of Roman Studies, Britannia, an online newsletter, Epistula, and a monograph series; owns and manages, jointly with the Hellenic Society and Institute of Classical Studies, a world-class Classics Library in London; organises an events programme of lectures, conferences, visits and online courses; and offers a wide range of grants to schools, students, and researchers.

The Society is both a Company and Charity so Council members will be both Company Directors and Charity Trustees.  The Council meets three times a year: a Tuesday afternoon in November and March and a Saturday in June (when the AGM is also held). The Council meets in person, but it is possible to join meetings online if necessary. The Council conducts all the formal business of the Society, such as approving the election of new members, receiving reports from the Society’s committees, approving financial expenditure, and planning future policy. Council members are also asked to play an active role in supporting and promoting the activities of the Society such as by encouraging new members and advertising the Society’s events and grants within their own institutions.

The Council will nominate a number of names to go forward to election at the AGM in June. If you would like to be considered for nomination, then please send a brief statement setting out your reasons for wishing to join the Council and any relevant experience, and a short c.v. Please note we are happy to consider expressions of interest from classics and related professionals in the academic, schools and museums sectors, or anyone with an interest in the classical world. We particularly encourage younger scholars to apply, but all Council members must be full members of the Society. Council members are not remunerated, but travel expenses are paid for attendance at meetings.

Please send all expressions of interest to Dr Fiona Haarer (office@romansociety.org) by Monday 17 March, 2025.
